Phillip Rhodes graduated with a Diploma in Performing Arts (Voice and Drama) in 2001, where he studied under Patrick Power. During his studies he performed the role of Riff (Westside Story), Pilate (Jesus Christ Superstar), and MacHeath and The Beggar (The Beggar's Opera).
In 2003 Phillip performed in productions of, Blood Brothers
, performed as Enjolras (Les Miserables)
and, Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas)
for Hawke's Bay Song and Opera. Phillip's Maori tribal affiliations
created an opportunity to perform the waiata for Jose Carreras at the
powhiri (welcoming) the famous tenor to New Zealand. A ‘New Zealand Opera Emerging
Artist’ in 2004, Phillip appeared in NBR New Zealand Opera's productions
of Tosca, L'elisir D'amore and Rigoletto. During 2004 Phillip
also sang the role of Marcello, La Boheme,
and Moki in the modern Maori opera 'Ahua'. In 2005 Phillip
won the New Zealand Aria Competition (formally the 'Lockwood Aria'),
reprised the role of Marcello and sang the lead role of Dick
Turpin in the world premier of 'Turpin The Musical'. In 2006 Phillip toured with
New Zealand Opera singing Malatesta, Don Pasquale, and sang the
role of Monostatos in 'The Magic Flute'. Phillip also
enjoyed various roles in Auckland opera factory’s production of
L’enfant Et Les Sotiléges. During 2007 Phillip won the
prestigious 'Lexus song quest' (formally the 'Mobil song quest') and
sang the role of Ping, Turandot, and understudied Enrico, Lucia di Lammermoor
for New Zealand opera. In 2008 Phillip was awarded a directors scholarship to attend the Cardiff International Academy of Voice under the tutelage of Dennis O'Neill. Phillip has since been awarded the Laurie Coon Scholarship (administered by the Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation) and the Adastra Elite Scholarship. 2010 Phillip was a finalist, placing second in the international Monserrat Caballe singing competition held in Zaragosa, Spain. As a result, Phillip was invited to sing with the legendary diva in Cologne, Germany. Phillip
